Arrest warrant issued in Philadelphia murder of Dominique Fells

An arrest warrant has been issued in the murder of Dominique "Rem'mie" Fells, a Philadelphia black transgender woman. Authorities believe 36-year-old Akhenaton Jones is responsible for Fells' murder, according to CBS Philadelphia.

Fells' body was found in June 2020 on the banks of the Schuylkill River. Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small told local station WPVI that the 27-year-old had suffered stab wounds and trauma to the head and face, and her body was found with both legs severed.

Fells is believed to be the 13th transgender or gender non-conforming murder victim in the U.S. this year, according to the Human Rights Campaign. The advocacy group said it's possible other cases have gone unreported. Her slaying has renewed calls from advocacy groups for steps to end violence against transgender people.
